Samantha's Pride

Go Pride!
Sammy and Pride are really makin' it big now! I got so mad at Brad during the book that I almost threw it down! It's been a long time since I've read such an exciting story!

A realistic story
Quite frankly, this book blew me away. Lets give the author credit, shall we? It was obvious Campell knew her facts, and knew them well. She portrayed each character to their potential, whether it be the obnoxious Townsends, or the courageous Griffins. I felt Wonder's Pride come alive in the text, and felt Samantha's misery and fear when he was injured in the Belemont. I think this is a very realistic scenario, and Campell protrayed it wonderfully. Five Stars!

Very Touching
"...I couldn't leave him there..." That's how I felt as soon as I picked up book No. 7 of the Thoroughbred series, Samantha's Pride. This story perfectly tells about a Champion colt, Wonder's Pride, of Ashleigh's Wonder, (Kentucky Derby Winner) in his 3-year-old season. My heart really jumped into my throat when Ashleigh decided to take things into her own hands.

I really enjoyed this book. I really hate Brad though. I hated him from the time he "Muscled" Ashleigh's Wonder around, and bruised her ankle.

All horse lovers: this is a "Must read!"

Lonely Planet Southwest: Arizona, New Mexico, Utah (Southwest, 3rd Ed)
Published in Paperback by Lonely Planet (May, 2002)
Authors: Jeff Campbell and Rob Rachowiecki
Average review score:

My torch in the darkness!
This book was of great assistance in my tours of the grand canyon, mt zio, bryce canyon, utah, arizona, new mexico and Nevada. If your stuck on where to go next, the book easily gives you options. THere has never been a better travel guide than Lonely Planet. I swear by them. Most people like to sell back their books when they are done, but by the end of your trip, this book becomes a souvenir of its own, and demands to be placed proudly upon your bookshelf.

Your standard LP book
I have recently encountered poor Lonely Planet books, but this was not one of them. It is the good old LP at work.
The coverage of Las Vegas, however, was extremely poor. I spent there 24 hours and this book didn't have enough info for even that short of a trip. The rest is great.
The California LP had twice as much info on Las Vegas.

A Very Useful Guide!
I relied exclusively upon the 3rd edition of Southwest to guide me through a recent, quite extensive road trip of the high desert regions discussed in this exceptionally well-produced Lonely Planet publication. I had a wonderful, adventure-filled time of it in no small part due to the creative suggestions for travel routes offered in this volume. If a road was not on the maps printed in this edition, then it was impassable for all intents and purposes to non- 4-wheel drive traffic. And I found hotel, B & B, country inn, and youth hostel selections to be uniformly accurate and helpful throughout the book. Suggestions for restaurants were diverse, cost sensitive, and often inspired as well. I enjoyed many superb meals at very reasonable prices as a direct result of explicitly following the directions in the pages of Southwest.

One problem I had with this travel guide was what I came to consider insufficient differentiation of descriptions of historical sites. For example, Chaco Canyon, Canyon De Chelly, and Mesa Verde are all described at about the same superlative level by the authors. But I found Chaco disappointing, if for no other reason than there is little left of the architecture that once graced the arid, remote site. And the ENDLESS dirt road going in should have been re-graded years ago. The site is a pain to reach! For me, the best thing about Chaco was the movie narrated by Robert Redford (which was available for viewing at the Guest Center). But you would never get this from the book. Aside from this minor criticism, I cannot recommend Southwest too highly for those seeking the warm, friendly welcome and indescribable landscapes that come in abundance when touring this remarkable, magical region of the USA.

Ratkin

Average review score:

A Great Source of "Gimmies," But Logic-Impaired
Like so many White Wolf expansion books, this one pulls the rug out from under the Storyteller by reversing many of the earlier sourcebooks' assumptions and by loading down player-characters with previously unavailable goodies. Nothing new so far, but this time the changed premises are really silly. Rattus norvegicus, the Norway rat (which the book keeps pointing out is THE rat we're talking about) is a parasite on Homo sapiens. It couldn't survive in anything like its present numbers without man and his works, such as apartment buildings and grain silos. So the Norway rat would necessarily be a great friend of the Weaver, no? NO! Also, remember that Rat is the Totem Spirit of the Bone Gnawer tribe. So Rat must be pretty confused, or pretty disgusted, by the Ratkins' determination to exterminate all Garou without regard to tribe. And then you have the ability of some Ratkin to enter a cartoon realm and/or use cartoon abilities just because rats often feature in Saturday morning cartoons (e.g. Pinky and the Brain). In sum, the Ratkins presented in this sourcebook are slavering cartoonified lunatics dedicated to bringing civilization crashing down around their own ears for - no reason in particular. If that sounds like fun to you, hey, knock yourself out.

amazing awesome book from our white wolf friends!
Breedbook Ratkin is, I have to say, one of the best breedbooks to date. Along with a very much expanded history from the rat's point of view, it includes all those nifty gifts and fetishes that the ratkin use well and often(circular saw blade launcher, anyone?). It also includes the 4 auspices from the player's giude and 4 new types as well, some of which are plain wicked. For example, the twitchers, a new type of berserker-warrior, frenzy at difficulty 4. All the time!! That means you have chance of frenzying at something as trivial as dropping your coffee-spoon(extreme example, but you get the idea...). All in all, a must have book for Werewolf players and Ratkin fans alike.

Reckoning Rats
This should have been a year of the Reckoning books. The book gives the perspectives of the Ratkin, psychotic were-rats who are trying to bring about the apocolypse. And yet they are not evil, not wyrm creatures, merely alien to us and to the Garou. The art is excellent, and I loved the opening story, particularly the Che inspired poster of the hero.

Ashleigh #5 The Forbidden Stallion
Published in Paperback by HarperCollins (June, 1999)
Authors: Joanna Campbell and Chris Platt
Average review score:

Ashleigh: The Forbidden Stallion
"Before Thoroughbred, Ashleigh Griffen lived at Edgardale, her family's farm in Kentucky. Nothing could be more perfect than life on the farm with her family, her favorite horses, and her best friend, Mona. Ashleigh loves helping with the horses-and dreaming of become a jockey some day..."

Ashleigh Griffen is thrilled when she hears that she and her family are going to see the wealthy Danworths...and also one of Ashleigh's favorite stallions, Alladin! But, as she watches Aladdin racing and working out, she sees that he has a 'moose-like' way of racing which causes him to lose nearly all races. Ashleigh just knows that she can find out why Aladdin is like that if she can ride him, but she can't because she had terrible math grades and her parents forbid her to ride any ANY horses until she get her grades up.

But if she don't help Aladdin, Peter Danworth would no longer love or even care for Aladdin anymore. Ashleigh gets news that if Aladdin loses his next race, the Danworths will retire him to stud at Edgardale...but as she accidentally discovers the secret of how to run him to win, will she tell Peter about it or keep it to herself so that Aladdin would come to Edgardale?

I thought that this book wasn't the BEST in the Ashleigh series I've read so far. It was still fun and interesting to read though, and I recommend it to kids and maybe teenagers too. Though I kind of think teenagers would find it a bit easy to read.

Great Book!
I love the Thoroughbred series, but this is one of the best yet. It is so cool how Ashleigh discovers the problem with Alladin after she sneeks a ride on him. (She's not allowed to ride) I won't give the rest away. FANTASTIC BOOK! HORSE LOVERS- READ THIS BOOK!!!

Is Aladdin ruined?
In this book Ashleigh Griffen and her family spend a week at the Danworths' farm in Florida. Aladdin's Treasure, a colt the Griffens sold to the Danworths isn't running well and Ashleigh is devastated. She figures out his secret, but will she tell Peter who owns Aladdin? This book was great, even though Ashleigh acted a little bratty.

Alone: The Classic Polar Adventure (Kodansha Globe.)
Published in Paperback by Kodansha International (June, 1995)
Authors: Richard E. Byrd, Philip Turner, and David G. Campbell
Average review score:

NOT the greastest.
Byrd was in an incredible location but there are many many more interesting books out there. When I read a book that I think is worth reading I will lend it to someone else. I don't think I will give this book to anyone else just because there are better adventure stories out there. Read "Endurance" instead.

One man's contest against himself.
This journal account of Byrd's months at the South Pole reveal the most extreme circumstances that force a man to discover the absolute limits of his will and inner strength. With the heritage of the great sea explorers, and precursor to the great space adventurers, Byrd forces himself to unveil the depths of fear and determination when he alone is responsible for his survival. This book is one of the great adventure stories of the twentieth century and its factual account rivals any piece of fiction.

Stunning!
If you are looking for a book on an Antarctic adventure, perhaps there are better choices to be made. But if you want to understand the struggle and hardship of being physically and mentally isolated, or experience the terror of dealing with an unknown adversary, then I can recommend no better book than this one. Byrd takes what could have been an extremely dry subject and makes it read like a classic adventure novel. And it's all the more exciting because it's true!

Cindy's Runaway Colt (Thoroughbred, No 13)

Good Book
Cindy Blake is new to Whitebrooke. She first came to Whitebrooke as a runaway from a foster home. She soon become the McLeans foster child and is working with the horses. One day, well out on a ride. She finds a beautiful gray Thoroughbred in her neighbours (sp?) back yard. As she leaves, she sees the horse being beaten by it's owners. She goes home and no one beleaves her. At Townsend Acres, half-owners of the racing mare Wonder, Cindy is acused of stealing a watch. She gets in trouble with the foster group and my be taking away. In anger, she goes out on another ride and finds that the horse "Glory" has jumped the paddock fence and is running around in the woods. She takes him home and puts him in a shed, hoping that no one will find him. Will her plan work and will she be able to keep Glory in the shed or will she be taken away and never see Whitebrooke again?

I just finished reading this book last night and it was better than I thought it would be. It is a truly moving story about how crule the world can really be. Four stars.

Cindy is Incredible!
This is a really good book. Cindy is reasonably sensible and Glory sounds like the perfect horse! If you like horses and racing (and Americans) try this book.

Glory!!!!!!!!!
It was an awesome book! You'll get hooked on March to Glory(Glory's real name) and Cindy's love for him and the next 6 books! But don't get TOO attached. Cause starting from #19, Cindy completely forgets about him and gives her heart to a horse named Strom's Ranson, then he dies and she gives her heart and attention to Champion, one of Wonder's. Then I guess when this foal in #20 appears she'll probably forget about Champion like she did with Glory and give her heart to the foal, Honor Bright. Knowing Cindy, it would happen

VERY COOL!!!
This is defintly one of my favorite TB. Pride's training is going well, and Samantha even gets to help train him! Ashleigh and Samantha must preswade him to keep the colt and the mare on the farm. Will Pride and Wonder be sold, or will they stay? Find out in number 6 of the TB series!

THIS BOOK WAS SO BREATH TAKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have to say this was the best book so far and Wonder retired! The way Ashleigh and Samantha fought fo Pride was awesome. It was so good and couldn't put it down. I think Mr. Townsend was out of his mind to even think of selling his half-interest in the colt. But it was a shame that Ashleigh couldn't find the money to buy him out. But who cares, as long as Pride, Samantha, and Ashleigh are all at Whitebrook happy with Pride!!!

Wonder's done it again!
Wonder's had a winner born. A silky brown colt that looks just like her was born.Ashligh is naming him Wonder's Pride. But trouble has just risin when Brad returns to the farm. Worst of all, Wonders Pride might be sold! Can Samantha save Wonder's Pride from the auction block?Townsed Acres is under lots of pressure. Ashligh is in need of help. But what can two gils do to save an intire farm?

Great!
Travel through Ashleigh's in her shoes with this book. Ashleigh really needs a new saddle, and the prize for the horse show competition is just what she needs! But that means she's going to compete against her best friend, Mona. Is the saddle really worth losing Mona's friendship? Read this book to find out.

I've read a lot of reviews of people saying this series is going downhill. But I think everyone should just enjoy the book instead of hanging on the small mistakes.

Awesome
This book was Great. It's about how Ashleigh really needs a new saddle and the winner of the most points for showing season wins it. Ashleigh decides to compete for the saddle. But Mona is also competing. They both really want it. Along the way Mona gets really competitive. At the final show Ashleigh uses a big beautiful thoroughbred instead of stardust. Ashleigh takes the lead in points and Mona get really mad. Is the saddle more important than their freindship? Read "The Prize" and find out what happens.

A fun read
This book is a fun read about the power of friendship. Ashleigh decides to compete against Mona for an English saddle that is being given as a prize. Ashleigh normally doesn't show Stardust, but when they start to win some classes, Mona gets worried and the competition is on. Can their friendship withstand the pressure?

Hydrogen Peroxide: Medical Miracle
Published in Paperback by Soundview Books (January, 1996)
Author: William Campbell Douglass
Average review score:

INFORMATIVE; WOULD BENEFIT FROM ONE MORE EDITING
I am undergoing Hydrogen Peroxide IV therapy (1x weekly for 20 weeks). This treatment was recommended to me by a nurse practitioner who had used it with amazing results for an infection that became resistant to antibiotics. Initially, I searched the internet for information. Excellent information was available, especially in the form of testimonials from patients. This book provided additional information. It helped me understand the bio-mechanics of what is happening in my body.

Though this book is "user-friendly", I think it would have been improved by one more editing. An update, including current doctors using this treatment nationwide would be extremely helpful. What I did like about the author, was his friendly "bedside manner" and his courage to tackle the AIDS epidemic in Africa with Hydrogen Peroxide.

This treatment is seen by many nowadays as hype or voodoo, especially by the traditional medical community. Many have never heard of it. It is my understanding it was widely used in the 40's, however. Doctors are returning to it, because patients with problems like candidiasis, hepatitis, HIV, herpes, viral pneumonia, gangrene, or immunity problems are not well-served by western modern medicine. Nobody wants to be told they have an incurable disease. This treatment gives hope where none else exists. Since I have not yet completed my treatment, I am unable to comment at this time, with authority, on its efficacy.

The miricle of H2O2 and natural Healing
I am a naturopath and firmly believe that we are taken for a very big ride by the drug companies. I have been looking for a good book on the benefits of hydrogen peroxide but until now was unable to find one.
About 16 years ago I had a mother bring her 15 year old son to me for colonis irrigations, She was sent to me a Seventh Adventist who had prescribed 35% H2O2 ( food grade). He started with 2 drops in a quarter glass of juice 3 times a day and increased the drops y one a day until he was taking 25 drops 3 times a day. I forgot to mention that his doctors had only given him 6 months to live, They tod his mother that if they gave him Kemo she would have him for 12 months- she refused. He is now 32 maried and has a daughter and another baby on the way. His mother has a permament appointment with me every week. The tumor he had on the brain completely disappeared in about 18 months. We say this because it was 18 mths before she took him back for a test.the doctor was supprised to see he was still alive and after tests told her that the tumor had completely disappeared and that there treatment was working. She informed him that they were not using there tremtment and were going to a naturopath, he never spoke to her again just stared at her until she left.
I use her quite frequently to help me with my patients with their diet. Too many of these people are told by the medical profeccion that we will kill them with our unproven theries and they believe them.
I would like one or two of these books but I am not good at ordering on the net I seem to make too many mistahes.

This is an important health resource book for the home.
This book cites frequent research statistics for the use of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) going back over a hundred years. The efficacy of H2O2 to fight bacterial infections is well documented. The author also explains how the human body requires more oxygen than is now available in our atmosphere.

The author also gave many case examples of how H2O2 was used to help patients with a variety of illnesses.

This reader suffered from acid reflux for years, and tried everything from OTC antiacids to the latest and most expensive prescription antiacids, none of which helped much.

After reading elsewhere that acid reflux was believed to be caused by bacteria, I drew my own conclusions, and started taking 10 drops of H2O2 three times a day in a glass of water. After three weeks I realized I wasn't bothered by the acid reflux anymore. That was four years ago and I thank Dr. Douglas for writing this book.

The Econometrics of Financial Markets
Published in Hardcover by Princeton Univ Pr (09 December, 1996)
Authors: John Y. Campbell, Andrew W. Lo, Archie Craig MacKinlay, John W. Campbell, and Andrew Y. Lo
Average review score:

Applied Financial econometrics exponent
It is a good book, but there are some aspects which I find lacking in the book which could be helpful. For example, brief outline answers to some of the problems at the end of the chapter will help most readers no doubt. Also, a more comprehensive cover on the rational bubbles and GARCH type models for asset returns will help no doubt, as well as problems that may arise during implementation. This book is aimed at the advance graduate student who is pretty proficient in theoretical finance and advance econometric issues already.

A classic book on financial econometrics
This is really a classic book on financial econometrics. I like the design of the book. The content is also pretty up-to-date. A little bit advanced - requires solid background in econometrics, analysis, statistics, and some stochastic calculus. The only problem I have is the authors did not provide background data, so it's really hard for people to do self-study like me. If the authors could include a preferred computer program (i.e. Matlab, GAUSS, EViews, etc.) with codes and data, that will make the book a true bible of financial econometrics.

The only book you may need for financial econometrics!
Finally, we have a book like this. It is comprehensive, not so hard to follow, and handsomely structured. It shows you the power of combination of mathematics, statistics, and finance. It is like beer. It makes you dizzy and enchanted simutaneously.

It stimulates you to dream of modeling the stock market and know the tomorrow's price of Amazon.com. At least, I am going to give it a try! You can have fun, make money, and look mysterious at the same time.

Review or learn the math and statistics courses necessary for the book. Read the book three times. Then, you are near the top of mountain.
